Decodable Book : Gus and His Pup


Gus and his pup is a great decodable book for early readers (Level 1) it helps young children to practice reading simple words with the basic phonics concepts. This book itself includes the phonics concept of short U (Up)  (EX: "Gus and his pup had fun in the sun. : Gus sat and had jam on a bun, his pup dug in the mud") It reminds me how crucial it is for children to be able to practice phonic skills.

I personally liked this book although there isn’t a really compelling storyline (storyline:  Gus and his pup having a good time playing in the backyard!) it does however focus on decoding grammar and vocabulary which is important for all young readers. It also helps to encourage children to blend and not guess those unfamiliar words. This book can help these young readers to become self-reliant when it comes to reading.

I would rate this decodable book a 4 out of 4. It is a level 1 decodable book so it helps children who need practice reading simple words, it helps those to comprehend those phonics concepts. It's easy to understand and to follow through which is always a bonus!

Sea Shapes by Suse Macdonald is an engaging book which allows young readers to identify basic shapes that are then transformed into these beautiful under the sea creatures! (which is great to hold the readers interest.) This allows the young kiddos to see how shapes can be hidden within our environment and how we are always around them! It has a good introduction of all different types of shapes like star = starfish, circle= the eyes of the whale, semicircle= the jellyfish’s head, square, heart, triangle= the shark’s fin, hexagon etc. Young readers will definitely view the sea differently after reading this and hopefully be able to point out different shapes for different animals that they see! The book also comes with an informative glossary that includes sea facts! it’s a great combination of geometry, science, art and reading.  The illustration is super fun, super colorful (Bright and vibrant colors of the ocean and who doesn't love the ocean!?) and the book is super simple....

Informational Text #2: A Ticket Around the World

This book is super cute and super informative! from the minute you open up the book you are presented with this fairly large colorful map marked with the countries you will be visiting showing how special each country is and how exciting it will be to learn about that country as a reader. The story line focuses on a boy (Narrative perspective) who visits his friends in thirteen different countries (Canada=Cara, Brazil=Fernanda, U.S=Eddie, Costa Rica=Alberto, France=Leonie, Morocco=Malak, Greece=Constantinos, Jordan=Haneen, China= Xiao, India=Meena, Botswana=Poloko, Philippines=Marilou, and Australia=Joe) As a reader you are taken on this journey around the world and learning about the food, the language, the landmarks, the cultural events, traditions, wildlife etc. For example the boy visited Costa Rica, some fact’s that were presented was “ Costa Rica is a small country in Central America with over 4.5 million people.” The boy is visiting his friend Alberto who lives on a farm near ...

Picture Book #1 A classic : The Lorax

The Lorax written by Dr. Seuss is a such a classic! (One of my favorite picture books) The book consists of rhyming verses, beautifully illustrated pictures and the message of how important it is to take care of your environment. The Lorax is the keeper of the beautifully colored Truffula trees. the Once-ler (entrepreneur) then begins to produce thneeds (which have multiple use's) out of these Truffula trees and once he sees he is making profit he becomes greedy. The once-ler begins chopping a small number of trees down, but when he realizes that more and more people are buying the thneeds he expands the business by building a factory and producing a machine that will chop down huge number of trees. The Lorax who speaks on behalf of the trees warns the Once-ler that this will cause serious harm. A variety of creatures start to leave the area because there is now a lack of resources (food : the tree once provided food) and there is pollution in the air ...
