Picture Book #1 A classic : The Lorax

The Lorax written by Dr. Seuss is a such a classic! (One of my favorite picture books) The book consists of rhyming verses, beautifully illustrated pictures and the message of how important it is to take care of your environment. The Lorax is the keeper of the beautifully colored Truffula trees. the Once-ler (entrepreneur) then begins to produce thneeds (which have multiple use's) out of these Truffula trees and once he sees he is making profit he becomes greedy. The once-ler begins chopping a small number of trees down, but when he realizes that more and more people are buying the thneeds he expands the business by building a factory and producing a machine that will chop down huge number of trees. The Lorax who speaks on behalf of the trees warns the Once-ler that this will cause serious harm. A variety of creatures start to leave the area because there is now a lack of resources (food : the tree once provided food) and there is pollution in the air and water. The Once-ler gets down to his last Truffula tree and chops it down. (Since there is no more Truffula trees it shuts down the business) We then think the Truffula trees have become extinct and this then promotes the Lorax to leave the land.  The reader is left with hope that the little boy (who is living in this ruined town) who had been listening to the story will plant a new Truffula with the last seed given to him by the once-ler and he hopes that he will treat it with much more care then he ever did.

I love this book because the message behind it is so important it reminds us that if you don’t take responsibility for the environment then our own world could someday be like the one that the Lorax left behind. It’s important for everyone to protect the environment, the older individuals and the younger individuals. The book has beautifully manipulated color’s, the images on each page are fun and big, the rhyming makes it amusing for all listeners and readers. The characters are whimsical and eye catching. The overall message is impactful (respecting the environment and all living creatures). I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars, it is showing recognizable features of their world (a good place versus a bad place), it is straightforward and beautifully illustrated. The Lorax is delivering the message with splashes of color on some pages, but also dull colors representing the bad place on other pages which is a stroke of genius.
