Poem Book #1: A Light in the Attic

This poem book actually used to be one of my favorite’s when I was younger by Shel Silverstein! I remember constantly “skimming” it because the words at time were quite difficult and being fascinated by just the illustrations. I did that for most of Silverstien book’s, until I actually understood the concepts and could actually read! The poems in the book are about Backward Bill, Sour Face Ann, the Meehoo with an exactlywatt, and the polar bear in the frigidarie, Broiled face, and so many more! The poetry book contains all manner of strange people and animals doing crazy things (how great!?). The text is super witty and at time’s comical because the poems are about people who do crazy stunts (like the baby sitter who thinks her actual job is to sit on babies, or the use of the moon-catchin net) and there are lessons to be learned like using your imagination, laughing often, and kindness. This poetry book is fantastic for getting children excited about poetry due to the illustrations and comical side of things, it the perfect balance of fun and poetic. This particular books focuses on topics like feeling left out, bossiness, to clowns who are not entertaining and bad attitudes, each poem is truly unique and memorable!

The illustrations are creative, the characters look scratchy and the illustrations are always presented in black and white colors. I would rate the book 3 ½ out of 4 stars only because there are some morbid content in the book that younger children would not really comprehend like the poem “How not have to dry the dishes” it entices children to break the dishes so they don’t have to dry them, also there is a poem about the death of a child, so it’s important for parents to explain the concept of death before reading. The rhyming in the poems however are playful, silly, and it’s just a lot of fun and reader’s will definitely be engaged. The word's maybe a little difficult for some reader's, but it is a great read along to help build comprehension and to point out the word's that do rhyme!
