Picture Book #2 : Where the Wild Things are

Growing up, I sadly didn’t get the chance to read Where the Wild Things Are and boy did I miss out! This book focuses on Max who put on his wolf suit one night and starts to be mischievous, he is also known as the “wild thing” (according to his mom) the night he was sent to his room for punishment without supper a forest started to grow and grow. It grew until his ceilings hung with vines and trees were everywhere. An ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max and he sailed off through the night and day, he was sailing to where the wild things are. When Max arrived he saw the wild things and they roared, showed their teeth and rolled their eyes. Max said “be still” and showed them his magic trick of starring into their yellow eyes without blinking once. They were freighted and called him the most wild thing of all, they made him king of all the wild things. However, eventually Max Sent the wild things off to bed without super, he was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him, he smelled good food (all the way across the world) and he gave up being king. The wild things cried for him not to go, but Max stepped into his private boat and sailed back home to his room where he found his super waiting for him and it was still hot. (Max realized who loved him best of all, his mom.)

I personally found this book to be filled with such distinguishable pictures, it was filled with this imaginative journey that Max had created. The book I feel would appeal to many kiddos on many different levels because we all can be a little mischievous, we all are a bit adventurous (even if it’s just in our mind),we all have that longing to be loved, to be taken care of and to be fed good things (and who does that the best? our mom) Max started off being mad at his mother, but then he realizes how much he needs her (he realizes this when he couldn't control the wild things so he sent them to bed without super like his mom did to him) The book demonstrates the power of love, anger, defiance and then back to love again (displaying the message of parental love), the power of imagination, and the little adventure Max takes is appealing for the little ones. The colors and illustrations used for the giant monsters are so recognizable, the illustrations are enchanting and quite unique. I would give this book a 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, our imagination can take us to places we’ve only ever dreamed of, it can allow us to escape from reality. The illustrations are simplistic, but hold so much details which allows young readers to be engage and it holds there attention. As Max's adventure grows the illustrations also grow! I gave it a 3 1/2 only because the illustrations might be frightening for younger listeners or readers!

  1. Not only is Where the Wild Things Are a great story, but the illustrations are phenomenal. It is a great story about imagination and one that children can really get lost in. The pictures are incredible.
