Picture Book #3 : The Snowy Day
This book is so universal in its appeal, focusing on Peter and the big snowy city. Peter is awaken to discover snow which has covered everything in sight. After breakfast he puts on his red snowsuit and runs outside for an adventure, he is amused at first by his footsteps in the snow. Peter makes a smiling snowman, he made snow angel’s and he pretends to be a mountain climber (so imaginative). Peter then made a snowball and put in his pocket for the next day and returned home. Peter then communicated to his mom about all his adventures in the snow and before he went to bed he looked into his red suit pocket and saw that it was empty, the snow melted! As Peter slept he was dreaming that the sun had melted the snow away and when we woke up the snow was still everywhere! and once again he set sail for another snowy adventure, but this time with his friend!
It reminds me of the first time I ever played in the snow! (I indulged in my imagination and built a snowman, made snow angels and went sledding!) Peter is discovering new ways to enjoy the snow. The story is truly soothing yet exciting for young readers. The illustrations are truly unique it consists of cut-outs, it includes varies of textures, geometric shapes, and strong vibrant watercolors. Each page is filled with simple illustrations, but Peter’s bright red snowsuit is the focus. Each page is filled with those warm, soft realistic colors. The book appeals to young readers because it brings excitement and fun imagination when it comes to playing in the snow for the first time! The story is easy to follow there are just enough words to tell a story, the words aren’t so hard for young readers to sound out or for young readers to listen to and comprehend. The words often rhyme and do repeat (which is great for first time readers!) I would give this book a 4 stars out of 4, the color’s utilized and the vivd angles used to illustrate are truly great! the book is capturing the magic of the first snowfall! The book is also the first full-color picture book to feature a character of different color (the book doesn’t mention his race of being African American because he is viewed as a child who is pure and whimsically enchanted by the snow.

I remember this as one of my first books. I used to have a big red coat and whenever Ii wen in he snow it reminded me of this book. I like how this book shows how important snow is to children, like when he has nightmares about the snow melting away, but is pleasantly surprised when he wakes up. It also taught me how kids play in the snow in the city, something I didn't know about growing up in the suburbs.
ReplyDeleteThe Unknown is me, I replied before I was registered in the blog and it came up as unknown. I wanted to add that a picture from this book was used as one of the Christmas Card stamps for 2019. Recently my family and I received a few cards with the stamp, which I thought was pretty cool.
DeleteI love that! i'm so glad it helped you to learn how to play in the snow in the city because it can be quite tricky as a young child! Passing on the love of the book is absolutely wonderful! i've never seen the stamps, but I bet they are cute.
