Traditional Tale with a slight twist: The Three Pigs
A traditional tale that I remember reading growing up is the Three Little Pigs! It’s a classic tale of three little pigs who build three houses out of three different material (1. straw, 2. sticks, 3. bricks) but, a big bad wolf comes around and huffs, and puffs and blows down the first two pigs houses which were made out of straws and sticks. The big bad wolf tries to blow down the third house but is unable to destroy it because it is made out of brick! David Wiesner’s The three pig’s is based on the traditional tale, but with a twist! as the big bad wolf goes to blow the first pig’s house down he huffs and puffs and blows the pig right out of the story into a realm of imagination, as the big bad wolf goes to blow down the second house made out of sticks the pig is also blown out of the story and into the realm of imagination with the first pig! The two pigs then go to the third pig and the three pigs take on an adventure like no other! they are able to jump in and out of there fairy tale! The adventure that these three little pigs go on is quite comedic and so entertaining because they are traveling throughout different settings and into various storylines!
This traditional tale with a twist is truly brilliant! We see the three pigs escaping their fate of being eaten by the big bad wolf because they are blown out of there story and into this realm of imagination, they enter into other traditional tales (ex: picking up the dragon who is supposed to be slayed in the cat and the fiddle) and each tale has diverse illustrations. The illustrations are so whimsical, descriptive and visually stunning. The story shows how good triumphs over evil. Wiesner eliminates the violent endings and replaces it with a happy ending, the pigs go back to the last pig’s house (the brick house) and live happily ever after. The illustrations will keep young readers engaged in the book, the nursery rhymes will keep listeners engaged. I would rate this version of the traditional tale a 4 out of 4 stars because the story is traditional, but it has this lighthearted twist that makes the story comforting allowing children to embellish and to use their own imaginations.

It's so funny how many traditional nursery rhymes have evolved into retelling stories with twists. This sounds like a very unusual twist but a twist that makes the story more fun and exciting for children and less gruesome like the original.
ReplyDeleteI always loved reading the story about the three little pigs when I was younger. If you think about it, it is like the first time that you are introduced to some form of art that puts you in suspense. It sounds like David Wiesner made the story even more interesting with his special twist. I myself read a few of his other stories, and the images are so detailed that they are sure to keep the interest of young readers. I can only imagine how the combination of this new twist and his illustrations can easily entertain young children who are learning how to read.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great book to read. I remember reading the traditional tale but I think it is really awesome that the author puts a twist to it. I also think it is really cool that the pigs avoid being destroyed by the big bad wolf so when they go into other worlds they save other characters that were going to be defeated.
